The Credit Bureau Association (CBA) is a voluntary body, funded through membership contributions, that promotes fair and equitable services. We ensure the confidentiality, accuracy, relevancy, and use of data in accordance with international best practice and the relevant South African legislation, including the National Credit Act. The CBA seeks to support a sustainable and well-functioning credit reporting system and to represent the interests of the credit bureau industry in South Africa.

The CBA is mandated is to provide a framework for a sustainable and well-functioning credit information system, by facilitating fair practice within the credit bureau industry and by promoting transparency, accountability, high quality credit reporting and sound business practices.

Our members adhere to a strict code of conduct, which exceeds the requirements of the National Credit Act. They also adhere to policy directives implemented to improve the quality of data, ensure the integrity and applicability of the data and promote fair treatment of the consumer.

There are four primary classes of members within the Credit Bureau Association:

  • Full Members: any business entity that hosts a database of consumer credit information as defined by section 70(1) of the NCA, which includes the hosting of South African Credit and Risk Reporting Association (“SACCRA”) and National Loans Register (“NLR”) data as a member of SACCRA, for purposes of on-selling of credit information for risk related purposes.
  • Intermediate Members: any business entity that hosts a database of consumer credit information as defined by section 70(1) of the NCA, which includes the hosting of SACCRA and NLR data, for purposes of the on-selling of credit information for risk related purposes.
  • Associate Members: any business entity that accesses a database of consumer credit information as defined by section 70(1) of the NCA owned by another for on- selling of credit information for risk related purposes.
  • Affiliate Members: have an interest in the credit information industry but is not engaged in the on-selling of credit information for risk related purposes.

  • CBA members are represented by the CBA at government level, on the Credit Ombud council and within various other industry bodies and work groups.
